Will writing and estate planning in Solihull is something most people put off for far too long. According to the Money and Pensions Service, 56% of UK adults have no Will in place, including more than half of those aged 50 to 64. If that includes you, it’s worth considering how having a Will in place can make things much easier for the people you leave behind.

At Jerroms, our specialist team provides professional will writing and estate planning services from our Solihull and Halesowen offices. We help individuals and families protect their assets, reduce inheritance tax exposure and make sure the right people benefit from their estate.

Why Professional Will Writing and Estate Planning in Solihull Matters

Without a valid Will in place, your estate is distributed according to the UK intestacy rules. Under these rules, the law decides how your estate is shared, regardless of personal intentions. This can mean an unmarried partner receives nothing, stepchildren are excluded, and assets may not pass to the people you would have chosen. This can mean an unmarried partner receives nothing, stepchildren are excluded, and assets may not pass to the people you would have chosen.

A professionally drafted Will changes that. It puts you in control.

Beyond the Will itself, estate planning covers the full picture: inheritance tax planning, trust structures, Lasting Power of Attorney and guardianship arrangements. Done properly, it protects your family at every stage, not just at death.

Our Will Writing Service in Solihull

We offer a full range of will writing and estate planning services tailored to your circumstances.

Simple Wills

Legally robust documents for straightforward estates. Clear, precise and properly executed.

Complex Wills Including Trusts

For high-net-worth individuals, blended families or where vulnerable beneficiaries need additional protection. Trust structures within a Will can shield assets from care home fees, divorce proceedings and creditors.

Will Reviews and Updates

Life changes. Marriage, divorce, new children, property purchases and changes in tax law can all affect whether your existing Will still does what you intend. We review and update existing documents to reflect your current position.

IHT Planning and Lifetime Gifting

The current inheritance tax threshold sits at £325,000 for individuals, rising to £500,000 where the residence nil-rate band applies. Strategic planning, including lifetime gifting, business property relief and trust structures, can significantly reduce what HMRC takes.

Lasting Power of Attorney

A Will only takes effect after death. An LPA ensures someone you trust can manage your affairs if you lose capacity. We handle both property and financial affairs LPAs and health and welfare LPAs.

Will Writing and Estate Planning Solihull Cost

One of the most common questions we receive is what professional will writing costs in Solihull. The honest answer is that it depends on the complexity of your estate and what you need.

A simple single Will for a straightforward estate costs considerably less than a complex Will incorporating discretionary trusts or detailed IHT planning. The cost of getting it right is far lower than the cost of getting it wrong, through an invalid Will, a contested estate or an avoidable inheritance tax bill.

We provide transparent fee information at your initial consultation. No surprises.

Why Choose Jerroms for Will Writing and Estate Planning in Solihull

Jerroms brings together expertise across tax, financial planning and estate planning under one roof. For clients with more complex estates, that joined-up approach matters. Your Will, your IHT position and your wider financial plan are considered together, not in isolation.

Our Solihull office serves individuals and families across the West Midlands. We understand the local context and the financial complexity that often comes with it.

Will Writing and Estate Planning Solihull FAQs

How much should a solicitor charge for writing a Will in Solihull?

Fees vary depending on complexity. A simple single Will typically starts from a few hundred pounds with a professional will writing service. Complex Wills incorporating trusts, IHT planning or business assets cost more. Always confirm what is included in any quote and check the qualifications of whoever is drafting your Will.

What is the biggest mistake people make when writing a Will?

The biggest mistake people make when writing the will is that they fail to keep it updated. A Will written before a marriage, divorce or the birth of children may no longer reflect your wishes and in some cases may be automatically revoked. Marriage invalidates a previous Will in England and Wales unless the Will was made in contemplation of that marriage. Review your Will after every major life event.

What is the golden rule in Will writing?

The golden rule of Will writing is that whoever prepares a Will for an elderly or seriously ill client should arrange for a medical practitioner to assess the client's testamentary capacity at the time of execution. This protects the Will from future challenges.

What is the 7-year rule for Wills and inheritance tax?

The 7-year rule for Wills and inheritance tax relates to lifetime gifting, not Wills directly. Gifts made more than 7 years before death are generally exempt from inheritance tax. Gifts made within 7 years may be subject to taper relief or included in the taxable estate, depending on the timing. Lifetime gifting strategies need careful planning alongside your Will.

What is more powerful than a Will?

A trust is more powerful than a will. Assets held in trust sit outside your estate entirely and pass to beneficiaries without going through probate. Trusts can protect assets from care home fees, divorce settlements and inheritance tax in ways a standalone Will cannot. A well-structured estate plan typically combines both.

What is the best way to leave your house to your children in Solihull?

The best way to leave your house to your children depends on your circumstances. Options include a straightforward gift by Will, a life interest trust allowing a surviving spouse to remain in the property while protecting children's inheritance, or a discretionary trust for more complex family situations. The right answer depends on whether you are married, whether care home fees are a concern and the size of your estate relative to the IHT thresholds.

Is a family trust a good idea?

For many Solihull families, yes, a family trust is a good idea. A family trust can protect assets across generations, reduce inheritance tax exposure and provide for vulnerable beneficiaries without affecting their means-tested benefits. Whether it makes sense for you depends on your estate value, your family situation and your long-term objectives. Our team can advise on whether a trust belongs in your estate plan.
